Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a
set of concepts and best practices for Information Technology Services Management
(ITSM), Information Technology (IT) development and IT operations.
ITIL is the most widely accepted approach to IT service
management in the world. Providing a cohesive set of best practice guidance
drawn from the public and private sectors across the world.
ITIL gives detailed definitions of a set of IT practices and
provides comprehensive goals, activities, inputs, outputs, roles &
responsibilities and key performance indicators that any IT organization can
tailor to its needs. ITIL is published in a series of books, each of which
covers an IT management topic, and the current version is 3.
ITIL Version 3
Edition 2011
ITIL 2011 Edition is an update, not a new version.
During this time, the UK Government transitioned the ownership of ITIL from
the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) to the Cabinet Office department.

The core publications were released circa 2000.
The 7 core ITIL V2 publications include:
-
Service Support
- Service Delivery
- Business Perspective
- ICT Infrastructure Management
- Security Management
- Planning to Implement Service Management
- Application Management
ITIL V2 certification scheme focused on 2 of the 7 core
publications, Service Support and Service Delivery, with a minor reference to
the Security Management.
An ITIL V2 Service Manager is on only Service
Support and Service Delivery. The 7 core publications of ITIL V2 were
refreshed to create the ITIL V3 Publications in 2007. There is some
debate over the total number of core books in ITIL V2, we have used the
Introductory Overview of ITIL
V2
by itSMF as the point of reference.
The timetable for the ITIL V2
Examination withdrawal is as
follows:
-
ITIL V2 Foundation to cease 30 June 2010
-
ITIL V2 Manager to cease 31 August 2010
-
ITIL V2 Practitioner to cease 31 Dec 2010
-
ITIL V3 Foundation Bridge to cease 31 Dec 2010
- ITIL V3 Manager Bridge to cease 30 June 2011
Complementary Frameworks
ITIL V3's strength centers on its alignment with other
international frameworks and standards. The figure below illustrates the 5 core
publications and a sample of some of the other complementary publications. For example
ITIL V3 references PMBoK and PRINCE2 for Project Management rather than
re-inventing the wheel. It is very important that ITSM Professionals
understand the relationships between ITIL and the complementary frameworks
and standards. ITSM integrates all frameworks.
